Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS) Blog

Sue Luttner is a San Francisco Bay area technical writer and journalist who found herself following the polarized professional debate that’s surrounded shaken baby syndrome (SBS) for the past two decades. After years of research, she has concluded that well-intentioned child-abuse professionals working with an overly simple model of SBS are, in some cases, convicting innocent people and tearing apart innocent families.

Sue maintains a blog on the subject, onsbs.com, and here is a link:

  1. Hello, just want to bring this 2008 Colorado tragic accusation about Shaken Baby Syndrome to your attention. Per ABC News, Baby Alyssa actually died from a rare genetic disorder called “Spinal Muscular Atrophy” or SMA that caused her bones to fracture – rather than child abuse. But her parents were accused of homicide via SBS, the father of the baby felt so distraught that he committed suicide after shooting his wife in June 2008. The maternal grandfather (Paul Cuin) of Baby Alyssa spoke to the media this month (April 2012) about the tragic accusations and the 3 family deaths in 2008 (his granddaughter Baby Alyssa, his own daughter Tiffany & her husband Dave O’Shell).

  2. I hope prosecutors and the so-called medical “experts” (aka: the “know-it-all”) will all sit down and learn about genetic defects as possible causes of deaths in babies – rather than automatically ruling every baby death outside of doctor’s care as Child Abuse homicide. There is an ongoing court case in New York City where the parents of Baby Annie (father Hangbin Li and mother Ying Li) stay in jail for 4+ years BEFORE trial. The mother Ying Li has a family history of genetic disorder (Osteogenesis Imperfecta – incomplete bone formation). At least 5 family members died as infants in China due to this genetic weak bone condition. I keep updating this case in my blog at WordPress.
